Preventive health starts with exposure
Preventive health means reducing risks before illness develops. Managing particles, moisture and indoor pollutants is one part of that approach. Mechanical ventilation can provide controlled outdoor-air supply and extraction; appropriate filtration and humidity management depend on the design.
What is a DALY?
A disability-adjusted life year is a measure of disease burden: the equivalent of one year of full health lost through illness, disability or early death. It helps researchers compare population health impacts. A modelled reduction in DALYs is not a prediction of an individual family’s future health.
Health value is not cash in your pocket
Putting a monetary value on modelled health improvements can help compare investments, but this is different from savings on household bills. The guide’s worked example is an illustration, not a quotation, guaranteed payback or promise of reduced medical expenses.
Count the whole cost
Installation, electricity, replacement filters, servicing and equipment life all affect the result. Heat recovery can reduce the energy needed to condition incoming air, but performance depends on climate, design, commissioning and use. A home-specific assessment is more useful than a single headline payback figure.
Evidence & further reading
The Australian Academy of Science report provides population-level indoor-air evidence. The guide’s per-occupant DALY modelling is credited separately to Jason Quinn’s Sustainable Engineering discussion of Peter Luttik’s “Beyond DOAS” (ASHRAE Journal, July 2025), not to the Academy report.
